October’s Feature Tree, Shrub and Perennial
Article and photos by Verna Buhler unless otherwise indicated
This summer, my sister who lives in Manitoba, and I, joined a small group of other Canadians on a two-week hiking adventure based in the alpine village of Kandersteg, Switzerland.
We enjoyed every moment of our time there, and we believe that our experience was richer than that of the other eight hiking enthusiasts because of our love for plants, gardening and all horticultural matters.

Glenda, identifying and photographing a Swiss alpine plant
We often trailed behind our new friends because we were squatting down identifying, photographing, and closely examining details of the horticultural treasures we found. I was immediately drawn to trees and shrubs, and my sister was noting the tiniest alpine plants. We discovered, shared, and discussed plants on every hike.
Therefore, I thought that I would focus October’s feature plants on several surprises we found growing in their natural habitats in the Alps of Switzerland.
